The storm was harsh due to the high winds that hit the area that day. Like the low-budget gothic fright films being put out concurrently by Hammer Horror, Black Sunday is essentially a bridge between the grand black and white Universal monster movies of the 1930s—creaky, darkly Romantic, hung with spiderwebs— and the more gritty, violent and sexualized strain of terror that would emerge in the 1960s with Psycho and Night of the Living Dead and Rosemary's Baby. However, he accidentally breaks the cross, cuts his hand and drip some blood on the body.

Lane granted Frankenheimer use of Goodyear's blimps on three conditions: the film had to make clear that the villainous pilot did not work directly for Goodyear, but for a contractor; the final explosion could not come out of the word Goodyear on the blimp's side; and the blimp itself could not be part of any violence, for example nobody was to be churned up in its propellers. Films like this are wonderful to watch, and they pack for thrills than many other films in the genre. Bava's resultant solo directorial debut, Black Sunday, is among his best, up there with 1966's chilling Kill, Baby, Kill!
